1st Year Sailing
On Tuesday last, 15th September our First Year group set off to the Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer. The objective of the day was two-fold: to reward the students for the excellent effort each and everyone had made in settling in to Secondary School life, and to allow them to get to each other in a more social environment.
The day was a wonderful success. On arrival at the venue, the students were kitted out in wet suits and lifejackets before a thorough lesson in water safety and sailing. They spent two glorious, fun-filled hours on the water, sailing around the shores, while also being given the opportunity to experience the thrill of power-boating.
We would like to thank the staff of Lough Derg Yacht Club for a great day. Congratulations are also due to our former student, Aisling Keller, a member of the Yacht Club, who recently came 6th in the world in her category at sailing. We wish her every success in her future endeavours.
School Mass
The first school mass of the year took place on Friday the 18th of September to celebrate the beginning of the school year. We prayed for a good and studious school year and to congratulate the excellent Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate students on their outstanding results. Newly ordained Fr Vincent Stapleton celebrated the mass accompanied by Fr Everard. Fr Stapleton is a Borrisoleigh local and a past pupil of St Josephs College.
Junior Cert Results
On Wednesday 9th September, our Junior Certificate students of 2015 received their examination results. This showed the customary outstanding results achieved by students in St Joseph’s College. A special congratulations to the 3 students who received the highest results Jack Cullen, John Ryan and Cathail Ryan. 87.5% of our students who took honours papers received honours grades. Congratulations to all students and teachers on their success, hard work and dedication.

Group of Track-Attack Walkers
The aforementioned walk will get under way at 7:15pm with registration starting at 7pm. The walkers will proceed to complete 2 laps of the newly extended track around the full perimeter of the entire grounds. Registration for the running will start at 7:15pm where participants will have a choice of 3 different distances.
The various distances will offer a challenge for all grades of athlete. The shortest option is 2.5km which is ideal for complete beginners to the sport. Like the walk, the distance covers 2 laps of the entire grounds. Anyone who is starting out should remember that you do not have to run the entire distance. You can jog some and walk some and as the weeks progress, you will find yourself running further each night. We will offer help and encouragement for all who participate over the distance so start that fitness regime next Monday night and drag yourself down to the track.
The 2 other distances are 4km and 6km respectfully. The 4km will cover 3 full laps while the 6km consists of 4 full laps and one of the shorter laps. Again we encourage and welcome everyone to come along and join us. It will be a perfect opportunity for everyone to keep themselves fit heading into the winter months.
The league are purely a fun factor. They are designed to create plenty of banter between participants!! Planet Track-Attack is a 10 week Series and you don’t have to be from or living in Borrisoleigh to participate. We welcome participants from neighbouring parishes also. There is an entry fee of €2 per week with school going kids free of charge. Where possible, we would encourage participants to pay the €20 on the opening night as it would cut down on our workload and administration time which we would be grateful for. It would also mean that you would not have to register each night and could go straight to the start line.
Participants are reminded that an optional warm-up will begin each night at 7:45pm and we would encourage everyone to partake in this.
Tonight’s session begins at 7pm and all are welcome.
Our club are hosting a coffee morning this coming Fri Sept 25 in the Community Centre Borrisoleigh 10am to 12.30pm in aid of North Tipperary Hospice. If anybody would like to donate cakes/buns that would be great and they can be dropped into the centre from 9am. All support would be appreciated for this very worthy cause.
A representative from Thurles Citizens Information Centre came out to our last meeting on Wed. This was a very interesting talk and everybody learnt something new.
The Final was very exciting with five minutes remaining on the clock Drom were 1 goal ahead. With Borris-Ileigh scoring 1-1 in the final minutes, it secured victory for the home team. Congratulations to all the players and their manager Jody Boyle.
The Club would like to thank Drom & Inch, Moneygall and Upperchurch for participating and also to compliment all teams and their managers for the excellent games of hurling on the morning.
We would like to thank the Parents of the U10s for providing refreshments on the morning. Very much appreciated.

U8 Meagher Cup Tournament takes place this Sat 26th in the Town Park @ 11am. We would like to ask for your support on the morning to come and cheer on our U8s and hopefully we can retain the Cup. Teams participating are Drom & Inch, Loughmore- Castleiney and Upperchurch-Drombane. Best of luck to all on the day.
U13s were defeated on Saturday by our neighbours Templederry. This ends our participation in the Shield. Thanks to all the players and mentors Mick Ryan, Paddy Ryan and James Gould.
If you have set dancing shoes that you no longer require they can be dropped into the Marion Hall on any Monday night between 6.30 and 9.30.

U14’s played Shannon Rovers last for Sunday in the torrents of rain. Unfortunately, Shannon Rovers were the better team on the day.

U10’s were out in force in Holycross last Saturday, playing four games against Holycross, Ballybacon, Moycarkey and Thurles Sarsfields. A great days hurling was had by all.

All-Ireland Hurling Final in 2001. Tommy’s mother Reecie (nee Groome) hails from Borrisoleigh.
