St. Joseph’s College First Years Enjoy a Fun-Filled Bonding Day by Ava Ryan

The first-year students at St. Joseph’s College recently participated in an exciting bonding day while also exploring some of Tipperary’s historical sites.

The day began with a guided tour of the Rock of Cashel, where students were captivated by the architecture and rich religious history of the monument. They also enjoyed a walk to Hore Abbey, a nearby ruined Cistercian monastery.

After a quick lunch break, they continued their journey with a visit to the medieval Cahir Castle. As they explored the castle grounds students learned fascinating facts about its long history and the people who once inhabited it. Highlights of the tour included seeing the well-preserved great hall, the defense mechanisms, the dungeons, and the imposing towers, all of which gave the students a sense of what life was like within the castle walls centuries ago.

The day concluded with a leisurely walk along the riverbank beside Cahir Castle. Overall, It was a memorable experience for the first-year students.

 

TY students  visit Templemore Fire Station by Ieva Gervinskaite 

Recently, a group of TY students had the exciting opportunity to visit Templemore fire station as part of their extracurricular activities. The visit was organized to provide students with insights into the daily operations of a fire station and to educate them on fire safety and the various roles of the local firefighters in our community. 

The firefighters explained the importance of their role, highlighting the skills and dedication required to protect the community from fires and other emergencies. Students learned about the different types of emergencies the team responds to, ranging from house fires and car accidents to chemical spills and rescues. The firefighters then demonstrated some of the key equipment used in their operations, including the fire engine, hoses, ladders, breathing apparatus, and a powerful tool used for rescuing individuals trapped in vehicles.  

  The highlight of the visit was the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities. Under the guidance of the firefighters, the students got to try on the firefighting gear, including helmets and jackets, giving them a sense of what it feels like to be ready for action. They were also shown how to use a fire hose, which allowed them to experience the force and control needed to manage during a real fire emergency. We learned how to use fire extinguishers and were given tips on how to prevent fires at home and school. 

After the demonstrations, the students had the chance to ask questions. Many students were curious about the physical and mental challenges of the job, the training required to become a firefighter, and the most rewarding aspects of their careers. The firefighters shared personal stories, highlighting the sense of fulfillment that comes from serving the community and saving lives. The firefighters emphasized the importance of teamwork, quick decision-making, and staying calm under pressure-skills that are valuable in firefighting and many other careers. 

Overall, it was a great experience for the students and teachers who came along. 

 

Law Ed Workshop Engages TY Students by Elizabete Vilande

On the 12th of September, a solicitor from Law Ed visited St. Joseph’s College to deliver an informative and interactive workshop on the law for TY  students. The session covered various offences, their corresponding punishments, and examined real-life scenarios, focusing on how the law applies to young people.

The workshop began with students analysing different legal scenarios, discussing whether the individuals involved would be found guilty or not guilty. Thought-provoking conversations followed, including a discussion on Coco’s Law and how it impacts young people today.

As the session progressed, students had the opportunity to participate in a mock courtroom scene, where they put their debating skills to the test. This hands-on activity was a highlight for the TYs, giving them a chance to experience what it’s like to argue a case in a courtroom setting.

Overall, the workshop was both educational and engaging, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of the law in a fun and interactive way.

 

TY Students Drum Up Fun at St. Joseph’s College by Lisa Fitzgerald

On Thursday, September 19th, the TY students at St. Joseph’s College, Borrisoleigh, enjoyed a drumming workshop. Lasting just an hour, the workshop was a fantastic experience. We went in with high expectations, especially after hearing great feedback from previous years, and I’m happy to say it more than lived up to the hype.

Our instructor was really friendly and patient, taking us through a variety of drumming techniques. We started off by learning and playing different rhythms and beats. Sometimes we played softly, while other times we went all out and drummed as loudly as we could. It was such a good way to let out any pent-up energy.

At one point, the instructor played a melody on his drum, and we had to copy it back. He then gave each of us the chance to create our own melodies and have the group repeat them. This part was great fun and got us thinking creatively.

Towards the end, we were split into groups of seven and challenged to come up with our own unique drumming routines. We had to include a foot stomp, a clap, and a drumbeat, and then perform them in front of everyone. This was great for building our confidence and teamwork skills.

Overall, it was an enjoyable and hands-on workshop that everyone really enjoyed.

October – Safeguarding Month

October is Safeguarding month in the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly. In the Diocese we have a safeguarding committee, made up of lay members and Diocesan personnel, they meet approx 4 times a year and work alongside the Director of Safeguarding in ensuring safeguarding standards are maintained in the parishes as well as producing and updating policy, plans, guidance, and a report to the Archbishop on Safeguarding Practices withing the Archdiocese. On the safeguarding page of the Diocesan website you will find our safeguarding plans, policies and guidance.

Cabragh Wetlands

A book is currently being compiled about the history of GAA and Scór in Borrisoleigh. We are looking for names and photos if possible of :

Set Dancers: 1978, 1979, 1980, 2001 and 2008 sets ( they all won the North Final).

Ballad Groups: 1984 and 1985 North Final Winners.

Novelty Act: 2018 (County Final Winners).

Hi all,

I’ve been tasked with compiling and writing a history of GAA activity in the primary schools, e.g. North Finals/ County Finals, Primary Game, INTO mini sevens etc.

The more recent history is fairly well documented, however older records are sparse. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

If you are aware of any noteworthy GAA related facts from 1987 to present in relation to Fantane NS, St Theresa’s GNS, St Patrick BNS or Scoil Naomh Cualán please get in contact with me at scoilnaomhcualan@gmail.com. Or you can drop photos, newspaper cuttings etc. into the school and I’ll photocopy or scan what’s needed.  

I’m looking for photos of teams, photos of Primary Game representatives, write ups from finals, coaches that were involved over the years, pupils who went on to represent Tipperary in the various codes, GAA quiz winners etc.
