Fenian Walk And Glankeen Commemorative Event

Sunday 5th of March, marks the 150th anniversary of the Fenian Rising. On that night in 1867, bands of Fenians rose out all over the country in what was the first attempt ever to form an Irish Republic. Borrisoleigh and the surrounding areas were no exceptions, with groups assembling at Barnane, Dovea, Moyaliffe, Roskeen, Drombane and in Borrisoleigh itself. While the rising could be described as an abject failure, with the participants quickly rounded up and imprisoned or transported, it did go on to inspire a new generation fifty years later with the insurrection of 1916.

In Templederry, a band of Fenians made an attempt to raid ”a house of the gentry” to procure arms. However, the police and militia were aware of the plan and the men were ambushed and captured. In the incident, one of the group, Jeremiah Bourke was shot and seriously wounded. His fellow conspirators were captured, tried and transported to Australia but because of his injuries, the trial of Bourke was delayed. The following year he was tried in Kilkenny and sentenced to eighteen months in prison. Jeremiah Bourke was to go on to play an important role in the War of Independence. His family home in Templederry was a noted safe haven for men ”on the run” and indeed, Sean Treacy, Seamus Robinson and Sean Hogan were to find refuge there. His greatest contribution perhaps, was his role as a judge in the Republican courts. As the country bordered on anarchy in the wake of the truce of 1921, with burnings, reprisals and acts of vandalism becoming commonplace, Bourke stepped in and was steadfast in the protection of his Protestant neighbours, ex British army men and retired RIC.

On Sunday, March 5th, between 1.45pm and 2.00pm, we assemble at Ballyroan bridge and walk the mile to Glenkeen graveyard, to the grave of Jeremiah Bourke. Our program of events will be as follows.

1.45 – 2.15 Park and Assemble at Ballyroan Bridge (at Nenagh end of Borrisoleigh). A small number of cars can be facilitated to bring those in need of transport to Glankeen

2.15 –2.45 One mile Fenian Walk from Borrisoleigh to Glankeen Graveyard, with everyone, children especially, invited to bring small bunches of daffodils to place on the Fenian Graves

2.55 Piper (Joe Barry of Templemore Pipe Band) will lead the assembly into Glankeen Graveyard from the public road,

3.00 Event Convenor, Seán Hogan, calls the assembly to order and explains the plan

3.05 The Fenian Proclamation, forerunner of the 1916 Proclamation of an Irish Republic, is read by Clare Hanley (nee Kenny).

3.10 Blessing and Prayer by Fr Liam Everard, PP Borrisoleigh

A series of archive photographs of Tipperary Fenians and related archive material will be on display, and the public will be invited to bring and display historical family mementos and memorabilia relating to their ancestors and the Decade of Centenaries.

Alternative Plan in the event of very wet, inclement day on 5th March. Crowd to be directed to Community Centre and Fenian Walk cancelled. Small Group to lay wreaths and flowers at Glankeen instead. Undertake as much of programme as possible within Community Centre.

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

Our monthly meeting for March takes place Wednesday 1st at 8.30pm in the Community Centre. Any outstanding membership(€10) will need to be paid on or before that night. New members are always welcome.

Members of the group are going to a cookery class in Fiacri House in April and if anyone else is interested in going please contact Lucia 086-3961211 for more details.

Borrisoleigh Festival

Due to small numbers on our committee this years festival is in doubt. If you would like a festival in Borrisoleigh this July please help us. We are holding a meeting on Tuesday MARCH 7th @ 8pm in community centre.

Borrisoleigh Track Attack Notes

Track-Attack’s Family Affair
The presentation of prizes for the Track-Attack Twin Peaks Series will be held on Monday 13th of March and it could be a real Family Affair when the eventual victors go to climb the podium steps.
 
In group 1, Michael O’Brien is coming good just as we enter the final stages and his showing of fine form has put him in real contention to claim the title as he has closed the gap considerable between himself and the top 2 namely John Vahey and Noel Kennedy. It could well be a father and son double as the highly talented Cillian is also within touching distance of the overall lead in group 17 but in order to jump that last hurdle in pole position, he will have to gun down the very much in form Cathal O’Brien and that won’t be easy as the Templederry athlete has been in superb form in recent weeks.
 
The O’Meara trio are also in with a great chance of laying claim to the overall titles in their various groups. The hugely consistent Kathleen is leading the way in group 3 but will have to work hard over the final 2 scoring rounds to hold off the best efforts of Donal Ryan. Kathleen’s daughter Sinead is the star pupil in group 2 to date but a top class run from Tom Stapleton last week have guaranteed that the battle is not won yet. Daughter number 2 Aoife is also well in contention to claim a top spot and is currently holding down second spot in group 30.
 
The aforementioned Donal Ryan is within 10 points of the lead in group 3 and he’ll have to keep the pressure on if he doesn’t want to be outdone by his wife Noreen who is the current table topper in group 10. No pressure!!!!!
 
Will we have a mother and son bringing titles back to Templederry? In group 5 Eithne Kennedy is currently sitting in second spot and will 2 huge performances to overtake John Slattery for the title. Her son Cillian is driving hard for the group 24 title and is the firm favourite at this stage but he will still need to keep the pressure on his closest rivals.
 
We could well have a trio of sisters claiming titles with Fantane’s Treacy sisters all in an excellent position to make one final drive for glory. Carol is the current front-runner in group 12, Margaret is having a ding-dong battle with Noreen Ryan in group 10 while Noreen is now sitting in the long grass in group 6 poised to make one final lunge for victory.
 
Trish Ryan has been the silent mover in recent weeks and now sits in an excellent second position in group 10. The highly consistent athlete is within 4 points of the lead in a highly competitive group. Her sons James and Donncha are also in excellent positions to climb the final night podium. James have been showing his undoubted potential in recent weeks shaving huge chunks off his times and now sit looking down on his rivals In  group 28. Donncha is second in group 24 and with hard work over the final 2 outings, he could well close that gap to the summit.
 
We could well have 2 more husband and wife winning combinations when the final victors are announced. John Joe and Frances Maher have fought their way to second spot in groups 9 and 11 respectfully while in groups 12 and 21, Seb Marchand and his wife Karen are also sitting in second spot waiting to make one final burst for glory.
 
Olivia Murphy is within one point of the group 13 lead while her daughter Miriam is also second from top in group 8. Both are highly competitive performers so a title double is well on the cards.
 
Brothers Jody and Paul Boyle are overseeing proceedings in groups 14 and 19 respectfully while Jody’s nearest challenger Paddy Kennedy is only 2 points in arrears and he’ll be gunning for top spot where he could well be joined by his daughter Martina who sits only 3 points behind Celia Dwan In group 20.
 
The Kennedy duo of Joe and Cathal are the current leaders of groups 22 and 27 respectfully and will be hoping for a father and son duo. In another family connection, Maura Carey now sits in pole position in group 16.
 
Can the Groome mother and daughter duo of Siobhan and Daniel make one last leap for victory? Both sit in second position in groups 15 and 27 so all is to play for over the final rounds.

Borris-Camogie Club

SENIOR LEAGUE  – FIXTURES 2017.

Borris played Drom in the first round of the League on Sunday last. During horrendous weather conditions, Borris led by two points going into the second half, but unfortunately, a win was not to be.

Final score: Borris-Ileigh 1-02, Drom 1-04. Scores from: Aedín Hogan 0-03, Sarah Kinane 0-01 & Mary Bradshaw 1-00. Next games as follows:

Local Enterprise Week 2017

The nationally co-ordinated ‘Local Enterprise Week’ takes place around the country from 6-10 March.  Organised by the Local Enterprise Offices, these events are aimed at anyone thinking of starting a business, new start-ups and existing businesses.

Scór

 

Last weekend was a fantastic weekend for Borrisoleigh Scór.  The weekend started on Friday evening in Templederry where we competed in the B Final of Scór na bPaístí.  We won three competitions  -Tráth na gCeist, Nuachleas and the Rince Seit.  The North A Final was held in Newport Hall on Sunday.  There was great excitement when it was announced that Anna Harkin, solo singer and the set dancers –Emer O Donnell, Jane Delaney, Aoife Fitzgerald, Alesha Fanning, Emma Kelly, Niamh Ryan, Anna Harkin and Natasha Kennedy had came in first place.  Anna and the set dancers will go forward to the county final in Cashel on the 12th March.  The last trophy to be awarded in Newport was for the club of the year.  Due to the high standard of all our participants in all competitions Borrisoleigh was awarded Club of the Year for 2017.

Congratulations to all the children, their family’s, mentors and the Borrisoleigh Scór Committee. Reminder – All entries for Senior Scór which will take place in Newport hall on the 18th March must be submitted to Clare (087 2820497) on or before the 1st March.  If interested in being part of a set in Senior Scór please go to the Marian Hall on Monday night at 8.45.
