“Unravelling the threads of the Garravane Tapestry: 200 Years of Land, Lineage, and Leaving home”

Borrisoleigh Historical Society presents Mark Kennedy and a story of the Kennedy clan from Limerick and Tipperary to Australia and beyond.

Associate Professor Mark Kennedy, of Geelong, Victoria and Garravane, Limerick will present his research on the Kennedy clan of Garravane, Rearcross. He will tell the story of his ancestors from the time of Cromwell, their survival and continuance through the 18th and 19th centuries, of rebellion, famine, migration and land. He will also talk of Long Andrew Kennedy and his descendants in Tipperary, Limerick and Australia.

North Tipp – Mary’s Meals Fundraiser

Martin Bourke will cycle around North & Mid Tipperary while John Egan will walk from Thurles to Knock with Fr. Eamon Kelly, director of Mary’s Meals Ireland arriving there on August 15th. Mary’s Meal walkers and supporters from all across the country will converge in Knock for Mass in the Apparition Chapel to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mary’s Meals – an overview

Mission: That every child in the world receive one meal a day in a place of education.

  1. A global organization – raising awareness and funds in 18 different countries.
  2. Feeding starving children in 17 different countries.
  3. In 2002 MM was feeding 200 children in school.
  4. In 2023 MM fed almost 2,500,000 children in school.
  5. Cost – €22 per child in school for a full academic year.
  6. Education is the gateway out of poverty.
  7. Many children who were beneficiaries of MM in the early days are now back in their communities as qualified professionals.
  8. 96% of every euro donated goes to the charitable cause.
  9. 100% of all donations is forwarded to MM Ireland.
  10. We do not have a bank account. All donations are lodged to MM a/c and receipts issued by them.
  11. We in North Tipp Mary’s Meals cover all our expenses.
  12. MM has the blessing of Archbishop Dr. Kieran O’Reilly.

World Day for Grandparents & the Elderly – 28th July 2024 – Theme – “Do not cast me off in my old age” – Psalm 71

On this Fourth World Day devoted to them, let us show our tender love for the grandparents and the elderly members of our families. Let us spend time with those who are disheartened and no longer hope in the possibility of a different future. In place of the self-centred attitude that leads to loneliness and abandonment, let us instead show the open heart and the joyful face of men and women who have the courage to say, “I will not abandon you”, and to set out on a different path. To all of you, dear grandparents, and elderly persons, and to all those who are close to you I send my blessing, accompanied by my prayers. And I ask you, please, not to forget to pray for me. – Pope Francis.

Watch & Pray – Theme: Vocations, the Priesthood and World Peace

40 Hours Eucharistic Adoration in the Cathedral on Friday July 26th at 7.00 p.m. with Mass & Benediction, concluding with Mass on Sunday July 28th at 11.00 a.m.  It would be greatly appreciated if people would commit to spending one hour during these 40 hours of Adoration.  Contacts: Claire @ 085 1532258 and Nora @ 086 3079281.

Light the Fire Pilgrimage, Ballintubber Abbey

The Light the Fire Pilgrimage at Ballintubber Abbey, Co Mayo will take place on Sunday, 4 August, from 12.00pm to 4.00pm. Archbishop Francis Duffy, along with Deacon John Taaffe will celebrate Mass as part of the Light the Fire rosary/healing service.  Eurovision’s Dana Rosemary Scanlon will also sing her new song for Saint Patrick which recalls how our patron saint lit the fire of faith.

Below is a schedule of events for the day

3pm –                  Eucharist Healing Service

2024 World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly and the National Grandparent’s Pilgrimage at the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock on the 28th of July

We’re delighted that, on World Day, in addition to a candle lighting during Holy Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock, a candle will be lit at the top of our Holy Mountain, Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday. We hope that, on that day, candles honouring Grandparents and the Elderly will also be lit in homes everywhere, burning for Grandparents and the Elderly and shining the light on all they have done and continue to do in our families and our Church.  Our hearts are filled with love, thanksgiving hope as we approach this glorious day in our Church.

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club went off on their Mystery tour last Friday.  Everybody was busy trying to guess where they were off to. The weather didn’t look great on Friday morning but lady luck stepped up and we had a lovely day of sunshine.

Well done Rosie Madden, Margaret Ryan, Margaret Monahan, Ann McGrath,  Mary Kiely & Paddy Kennedy who received their prizes of tee shirts from Lucia Ryan Chairperson. 
 
The bus left the GAA grounds and we headed off to Nenagh.  We got a tour of Nenagh Castle and the Heritage Centre which was all very interesting. We went on to The Abbey Court Hotel for refreshments. Then we headed off again on the road and went to Killaloe where we were treated to a cruise. We finished off the day with a lovely meal in The Thatch, Ballycommon. We’d like to thank everybody that helped us make the day a great success and to Ray our bus driver. Our next trip is to Coolmore Stud on Aug 14th.  More photos from the day are in a gallery.
 
This Thursday July 25th Bishop John Ryan home from Malawi is coming to Borrisoleigh to say mass at 10am . This will be followed by Bishop John giving a talk in the Community Centre, Borrisoleigh about the work he does in Malawi. This should be very interesting and everybody welcome to attend.  
 
There has been a lot of work done on the Adult exercise equipment in the GAA grounds.  We have added 2 extra pieces of equipment and put in 2 ramps for people to walk/wheel up to the equipment.  There are a number of pieces suitable for wheelchair bound people.  Ground work has also been done and new grass seeds planted. While we would encourage people to use the equipment but please give priority to the senior members of our community.  We would also ask parents & children to pay heed to this. There is a children’s playground at the other side of the GAA grounds. These pieces of equipment are NOT suitable for under 14’s at any time.

A book is currently being compiled about the history of GAA and Scór in Borrisoleigh. We are looking for names and photos if possible of :
 
Set Dancers: 1978, 1979, 1980, 2001 and 2008 sets ( they all won the North Final).
 
Ballad Groups: 1984 and 1985 North Final Winners.
 
Novelty Act: 2018 (County Final Winners).

Hi all,

I’ve been tasked with compiling and writing a history of GAA activity in the primary schools, e.g. North Finals/ County Finals, Primary Game, INTO mini sevens etc.

The more recent history is fairly well documented, however older records are sparse. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

If you are aware of any noteworthy GAA related facts from 1987 to present in relation to Fantane NS, St Theresa’s GNS, St Patrick BNS or Scoil Naomh Cualán please get in contact with me at scoilnaomhcualan@gmail.com. Or you can drop photos, newspaper cuttings etc. into the school and I’ll photocopy or scan what’s needed.  

I’m looking for photos of teams, photos of Primary Game representatives, write ups from finals, coaches that were involved over the years, pupils who went on to represent Tipperary in the various codes, GAA quiz winners etc.
