Borrisoleigh Youth Club Volunteer Recruitment

Borrisoleigh Birdies

Delighted to announce that the Borris Birdies are back in full swing!!

The Borris Birdies are local women golfers who meet up a couple of times a year to enjoy a social round of golf.

The society had its first outing on August 25th 2024 in Roscrea Golf Club. The winners of the Scramble on the day were Sheila Delaney and Helen Hayes with an impressive score of 75 points. Prizes were awarded after a lovely meal in the clubhouse.

Our most recent outing was in Rathdowney Golf Club on October 5th. Blessed with the only dry hours of the day an enjoyable round of golf was had by all. The wining team of the 3 Ball Champagne Scramble were Shiela Delaney, Rena Ryan and Kathleen Tynan. Following the round, the group headed to the clubhouse for a well-earned meal, a bit of craic and planning courses and outings for 2025.

Our next and final outing of 2024 will be held in November in Thurles Golf Club with the Birdies coming back to roost in Borrisoleigh later that evening for the 19th hole.

New Birdies are always welcome and If you’d like to join us please contact a Borris Birdie near you!

St Joseph’s College

GAA Coaching Course – TY students

WHAT IF WORKSHOP?

BY I. Gervinskaite & E.Vilande

Recently, TY students at St. Joseph’s College participated in a ‘What If Workshop’ on safety, led by a Garda from Cork. The workshop started with discussions about what’s making the headlines in the news. After that, we discussed the different types of courts, laws, and issues like drugs, consent, and online safety. The workshop focused on developing a sense of responsibility among future legal professionals, highlighting the importance of making serious decisions in the legal field.

As they examined different hypothetical situations, students were encouraged to consider the consequences of legal choices. It was a strong reminder that every decision can affect lives. The collaborative setting of the workshop allowed students to share various viewpoints, deepening their understanding of complex legal issues. They discovered that the law is not just a set of rules; it’s a living framework that shapes society.

In summary, the “What If Workshop” was a valuable experience and the insights gained from these scenarios will help them make informed and ethical decisions going forward.

GAA Coaching Course

As part of the GAA coaching programme, led by Tipp GDA Pio Kennedy, Transition Year students had the opportunity to enhance their skills both on and off the field. The day kicked off at the Borrisoleigh GAA Complex with warm-up exercises. The group was then divided into teams of ten, where they were tasked with running drills and designing games to develop their coaching abilities. By the end of the session, all participants were certified in Go Games and qualified as Young Whistlers, now ready to support their clubs at the underage level in both coaching and refereeing.

Comedy Show

On Tuesday morning the 1st of October the TY students travelled to The Source in Thurles for a two-hour comedy show. The show looked at the mind of your teenage years, and the comic, Gearoid Farrelly started by telling us all about his experience in school. Once the show was over all the schools took a picture with Ger and gave him a massive round of applause.

Senior Ladies LGFA

Senior Ladies were in action on the opening day of the Championship on Thursday 10th October.

Work Experience

TY students are excited to begin their two-week work experience and thank all the local employers and businesses for offering this invaluable opportunity. This experience will give them a real insight into the working world, the chance to learn new skills and gain hands-on experience.

Knitting and Crochet Group

The Knitting and Crochet Group meetings begin again on Wednesday September 11 from 10am to 11.30am in the Community Centre. New members welcome. For queries please contact Mary at 0863098982

Series of Events at Cabragh Wetlands

Cabragh Wetlands is delighted to announce a series of free events which will run through September, October and November and which will comprise a little over three hours of activities, refreshments and music with the environment and its protection as a background theme. These events will be developed to meet the particular interests of various parts of the community including younger people, older people, new communities, sports clubs, business people and people with particular needs.

The programme of events is being made possible by a generous grant provided by the National Parks and Wildlife Service under its Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme 2024.

We will be taking small groups of 20 or so and giving them a tour of the wetlands, including the Cosmic Walk, bird hides, and ponds. We will be giving people hands-on experience with the equipment that is used in exploring nature and monitoring the environment. We will have some discussion about how each of us, within their own boundaries, can help become part of the movement to protect the planet, as well as the challenges and barriers to our doing that. And we will have some refreshments and some music to help things along. And, depending on the group, we will have quizzes, treasure hunts, or up-cycling workshops.

You are welcome to come as an individual, but it will be much more fun as part of a group. So talk to any group of which you are a member and arrange for a few of you to come along. We plan to arrange over 20 sessions throughout the Autumn so there is bound to be one that suits you.

We will be giving more information about the programme as time goes on. So be prepared and keep a eye out on social media, the papers and the radio. Or for more information email us at cabraghwetlandsmembers@gmail.com or call at 0504 43879 and we will get back to you.

                                                                                             ————————————————————————————————-

Hi all,

I’ve been tasked with compiling and writing a history of GAA activity in the primary schools, e.g. North Finals/ County Finals, Primary Game, INTO mini sevens etc.

The more recent history is fairly well documented, however older records are sparse. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

If you are aware of any noteworthy GAA related facts from 1987 to present in relation to Fantane NS, St Theresa’s GNS, St Patrick BNS or Scoil Naomh Cualán please get in contact with me at scoilnaomhcualan@gmail.com. Or you can drop photos, newspaper cuttings etc. into the school and I’ll photocopy or scan what’s needed.

I’m looking for photos of teams, photos of Primary Game representatives, write ups from finals, coaches that were involved over the years, pupils who went on to represent Tipperary in the various codes, GAA quiz winners etc.

Many thanks for your help,

Michael Small
