Borrisoleigh Youth Club Volunteer Recruitment

Borrisoleigh Birdies

Delighted to announce that the Borris Birdies are back in full swing!!

The Borris Birdies are local women golfers who meet up a couple of times a year to enjoy a social round of golf.

The society had its first outing on August 25th 2024 in Roscrea Golf Club. The winners of the Scramble on the day were Sheila Delaney and Helen Hayes with an impressive score of 75 points. Prizes were awarded after a lovely meal in the clubhouse.

Our most recent outing was in Rathdowney Golf Club on October 5th. Blessed with the only dry hours of the day an enjoyable round of golf was had by all. The wining team of the 3 Ball Champagne Scramble were Shiela Delaney, Rena Ryan and Kathleen Tynan. Following the round, the group headed to the clubhouse for a well-earned meal, a bit of craic and planning courses and outings for 2025.

Our next and final outing of 2024 will be held in November in Thurles Golf Club with the Birdies coming back to roost in Borrisoleigh later that evening for the 19th hole.

New Birdies are always welcome and If you’d like to join us please contact a Borris Birdie near you!

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club pictured before leaving the Arklow Bay Hotel in Wicklow

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club went off to Arklow last week on their Autumn break away.  Weather wasn’t great leaving Borrisoleigh but it didn’t deter everyone from having a great time.  Weather improved on the Monday and they headed to Rossborough House and Glendalough.  On the Tuesday they headed to The Botanic Gardens and onto Avoca. On Wed on the return journey home they stopped in Gorey for some retail therapy.

The fun was great and new friends were made along the way.

The next meeting of the Borrisoleigh Active Social Club takes place tonight Wed Oct 9th at 7pm in the Community Centre Borrisoleigh.

Series of Events at Cabragh Wetlands

Cabragh Wetlands is delighted to announce a series of free events which will run through September, October and November and which will comprise a little over three hours of activities, refreshments and music with the environment and its protection as a background theme. These events will be developed to meet the particular interests of various parts of the community including younger people, older people, new communities, sports clubs, business people and people with particular needs.

The programme of events is being made possible by a generous grant provided by the National Parks and Wildlife Service under its Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme 2024.

We will be taking small groups of 20 or so and giving them a tour of the wetlands, including the Cosmic Walk, bird hides, and ponds. We will be giving people hands-on experience with the equipment that is used in exploring nature and monitoring the environment. We will have some discussion about how each of us, within their own boundaries, can help become part of the movement to protect the planet, as well as the challenges and barriers to our doing that. And we will have some refreshments and some music to help things along. And, depending on the group, we will have quizzes, treasure hunts, or up-cycling workshops.

You are welcome to come as an individual, but it will be much more fun as part of a group. So talk to any group of which you are a member and arrange for a few of you to come along. We plan to arrange over 20 sessions throughout the Autumn so there is bound to be one that suits you.

We will be giving more information about the programme as time goes on. So be prepared and keep a eye out on social media, the papers and the radio. Or for more information email us at cabraghwetlandsmembers@gmail.com or call at 0504 43879 and we will get back to you.

                                                                                             ————————————————————————————————-

Hi all,

I’ve been tasked with compiling and writing a history of GAA activity in the primary schools, e.g. North Finals/ County Finals, Primary Game, INTO mini sevens etc.

The more recent history is fairly well documented, however older records are sparse. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

If you are aware of any noteworthy GAA related facts from 1987 to present in relation to Fantane NS, St Theresa’s GNS, St Patrick BNS or Scoil Naomh Cualán please get in contact with me at scoilnaomhcualan@gmail.com. Or you can drop photos, newspaper cuttings etc. into the school and I’ll photocopy or scan what’s needed.

I’m looking for photos of teams, photos of Primary Game representatives, write ups from finals, coaches that were involved over the years, pupils who went on to represent Tipperary in the various codes, GAA quiz winners etc.

Many thanks for your help,

Michael Small
